A system which transmits the identity of an object or person wirelessly using radio waves. Other auto-id technologies are bar code systems, optical character readers. Tags consist of an antenna and a microchip where the information is stored. The microchip is typically less than half a millimeter in size. Rfid tags can be mounted on various types of materials. Activates itself and transmits data using power generated by radio waves. Rfid tags cost as little as 0. 05 per tag. Active tags can be more than per tag. The readers are built with an antenna for communicating radio signals with the rfid tags. The readers may have multiple antennas for sending and receiving radio waves. Require line of sight to be read. Cannot be read if damaged or dirty. Can only identify the type of item. Require manual tracking and therefore are susceptible to human error. Can be read without line of sight. Can cope with harsh or dirty environments.
