Study questions: explain the key differences between local area networks (lans) and wide area networks (wans). Lan- lan (local area network) is a computer network covering a small geographic area, like a home, office, school, or group of buildings. Fewer problems associated with them, as there are smaller numbers of systems to deal with. Wan-wan (wide area network) is a computer network that covers a broad area (e. g. , any network whose communications links cross metropolitan, regional, or national boundaries over a long distance). More problems/faults because wans consist of large number of systems. Consists of ethernet: explain the history of ethernet and how it has evolved from a. 10mbps shared-media bus network to a star-based switched network technology supporting speeds of up to 100gbps. Ethernet was developed at xerox parc between 1973 and 1974. Digital equipment corporation (dec), intel, and xerox worked together to promote ethernet as a standard. Dix or digital/intel/xerox specified 10 mbit/s ethernet.
