NSD 225 Lecture 1: lactation
Document Summary
Ideally want babies to be breastfed for 1 year. Stimulated by pituitary hormone prolactin: let-down release of milk from milk-producing glands and movement through the milk ducts to the nipple. Milk production: supply and demand: production meets demand! 450-1200 ml/day by 6 months increased production to meet needs of twins and triplets: emptying of the breast dictates milk production. Breast milk supply and demand: pumping or expressing milk. To stimulate adequate milk may require 8-12 expressions per day. Nutrition during lactation: 1st 6 months. Additional 330 calories/day: 2nd 6 months. Rda increased by 25 g/day: other nutrients. Higher intakes of total carbohydrate, fiber, essential fatty acids, several vitamins, minerals: water additional 1 liter/day. Colostrum = first milk: thick yellow fluid produced during late pregnancy and few days after birth, contains antibodies, immune-system cells and lactobacillus bifidus factor, provides protection to infant against infections, facilitates the passage of 1st stool (meconium) Mature milk: thin, watery, slightly bluish composition, easily digested proteins.
