NSD 225 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Mitochondrion, Cytoplasm, Organism
Document Summary
Lecture 3: chemical level, cell level, tissue level, organ level, organ system level, organism. Parts of cells: cell membrane double layers of lipid, carbohydrates and protein, controls passage of substances, cytoplasm , combination of fluid materials and organelles (exept nucleus, organelles , compartments and specialized structures that perform specific functions, mitochondria , powerhouse of cell. Major site for energy production: nucleus , genetic material, has its own double membrane, directs protein synthesis and cell division, endoplasmic reticulum , communication center in cell. Smooth fat synthesis: golgi complex , packaging site for protein, lysosomes , cell"s digestive system, contains enzymes to digest foreign materials, peroxisomes , detoxify harmful chemicals, metabolizes alcohol. Cell metabolism: entire network of chemical processes, release energy from food, synthesis one substance from another, prepare waste products, atp: high energy molecule that stores the energy we need to do everything, two types of metabolism, anabolic: to put together (requires energy, catabolic: to take apart (releases energy)
