Document Summary

January 30, 2017 lecture 4 - everything about waves. Represents any physical process that propagates periodically or exhibits periodicity. Move side to side: transverse waves. Equal to the inverse of period (t) Measured in hertz (hz) f = 1/t. Amplitude = a = maximum displacement of any particle from its equilibrium. For a sinusoidal wave traveling in x-direction, amplitude is the maximum displacement in positive/negative y-direction. Wavelength = = velocity of a wave = = vt. Special type of waves (sin or cosine) Every point in string moves in shm with same amplitude and angular frequency: different max displacements at different times. Maximum speed = vm = a: angular frequency times amplitude. Maximum acceleration = am = 2a: (angular frequency)2 times amplitude. Interference: waves meet while traveling through the same mediums. In-phase: the maxima/minima (crest/troughs) occur at the same time. New amplitude is the sum of the separate amplitudes: amplitude = a1 + a2.
