Legitimacy crisis of kingdom and rise of new salafism. Sunni schools evolved and became rich, ie hanafism. Once british had succeeded in dividing the middle east (ottoman empire) caliphate was foreign to international relations. As a result of wahhabi massacre in 1929, king abdul aziz and sons have been reining ever since. Some brothers from aristocratic mother, some from mother that was a commoner. Time of repression of wahhabism and salafism, and time of concession. Worked to the benefit of religious establishment because rewarded for not involving politics in exchange for control of charity financial sector. Also in charge of schools, universities, endowments. Even though wahhabis would not dare to raise their voice to the king, the start of the oil industry gave him much control over the establishment. When died in 1953, conditions lead to division in wahhabism, rise of new salafism as link between old salafism and wahhabism.
