Drugs affect neurotransmitters: all drugs manipulate our neurotransmitters. Drugs work in three ways: antagonist: chemicals that block the action of a neurotransmitter, ex. Cocaine & dopamine: ssri anxiety and depression blocks reuptake of serotonin to leave more serotonin in the synapse to up moods. Neural communication: functions are done by the opposite side of the brain (left hand controlled by right side of brain, left brain: logic, analysis, linear, right brain: creativity, imagination, intuition. Temporal lobe: auditory info and processing semantics and speech: wernicke"s aphasia: issue comprehending of language, but can form speech. Occipital lobe: processes what we see: primary visual cortex damage can cause blindness. Parietal lobe: processes somatosensory information: pain and sensation, spatial relations. Cerebellum: little brain sits above the brain stem: posture, balance and coordination, alcohol hinders this ability. The limbic system: emotional system: thalamus known as the sensory weigh station .
