Psychopathology: study of sickness of the mind or behavior Misnomer: abnormal behavior is a statistical concept and a mind cannot get sick ­ Behavior disorders are real and have underlying ?? Diagnostic and Statistical Manual ­ An agreement as to what constitutes a diagnosis ­ Anxiety disorders ­ Schizophrenia ­ Mood disorders Anxiety disorders Anxiety: a diffuse emotional state related to fear, less intense but longer duration Etiology:  ­ Behavioral: conflict, stress, guilt, threat ­ Biological: ACTH, glucocorticoids, lactate ­ Good reason to believe its genetic ­ The GABA receptor General Anxiety Disorder: Symptoms: heart palpitation, tremors, sweating, shakes, rubbery leg Cause: conflict, threat, guilt, stress **Prognosis: good Phobia and Panic Disorder ­ Symptoms: intense fear of objects, places, events ­ Cause: anxiety, cause: traumatic episode o Someone turns on water facet she shakes, when 4/5 years old had fallen  into a creek where there was a waterfall pounding on her head until she  was saved, over time the event was stored and she began to react to water  facets ­ Prognosis: good ­ Video Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Symptoms: Recurrent ideas, irresistible impulses Case: game where you have to beat the car to the tree, can’t step on crack on the street,  have axe and every morning feels he must cut with axe. Mother had a terrible birth and  decided that it would be her last son and would not have sex with her husband anymore Cause: Anxiety, cause: frusteration, guilt, possibly genetics based (Prozac treats) Prognosis: good Case: Boy must wash hands very frequently Hypochondriasis Symptoms: organ dysfunction, morbid concern over health Cause: anxiety, cause: parent model, early illness **Prognosis: bad Somatoform Disorder Conversion Disorder Freud became famous for Symptoms: hysteric dysfunction (can’t see, no function of arm) Cause: Anxiety, cause: Conflict, guilt Case study: young woman (19) goes home at xmas break and brings boyfriend with her,  mother says boyfriend is a bum, crazy about this dude, and after she goes back parents  haven’t heard from daughter, married the bf on the fly (daughter loses function of arm,  then loses speech, tremendous conflict in life and developed disorder) Prognosis: fair Miracle cure explanation Psychosis: loss of contact with reality Schizophrenia What is mental illness? ­ Myth (Thomas Szasz) – video: no more of a disease than a “sick joke”, unique  view (few agree with) ­ Brain pathology Psychosis: organic VS functional (misnomer) Process VS reactive Schizophrenia ­ Split­brain (withdrawn from reality) ­ The split: associations, affect, withdrawn from reality (autism), values  (ambivalence) ­ Video: John Nash, all in his mind, voices tell you to carry out certain acts Theories of Schizophrenia 1.
