Message a in left ear, b in right ear. Shadow (speak out loud) one message to ensure attention. Able to focus only on the message they shadowed. Filters msg before incoming info. is analyzed for meaning. Can shadow meaningful msgs. that switch from one ear to other. Attended msg. can be separated from unattended msg. early. In other ear, heard words related to one meaning or the other of the sentence. Test: choose which meaning was closest to meaning of sentence. Task load: how much cog. resources are used to accomplish task. High load: uses almost all; no resources for other tasks. Low load: uses few; resources for other tasks. Divide attention btwn. remembering target & monitoring rapidly presented stimuli. Consistent mapping: target is #; distractors are letters.
