PSY 395 Lecture 3: Chapter 3
Document Summary
If no, fixed marker, if yes, variable risk factor. If no, variable marker, if yes, causal risk factor. Distal risk factor: something in childhood that isn"t going to impact until some distance has occurred, and the child is an adult (bullying as a child, schizophrenia as an adult) Proximal risk factor: something that happens right now (a child who gets bullied can be prone to suicidal thoughts) Diathesis: relatively distal necessary or contributory cause that is not sufficient to cause disorder. Stress: response of individual to taxing demands: diathesis-stress models: combination of diathesis and stress to cause disorder. Resilience: ability to successfully adapt to very difficult circumstances. Bidirectional influence: environmental activity which leads to behavior which changes neural activity which leads to genetic activity and can go the other way. Biological perspective: four categories of biological factors relevant to maladaptive behavior. Genetic vulnerabilities: genotype: total genetic endowment, phenotype: observed structural and functional characteristics of the genotype (how hyperactive are they)
