Why do people seek therapy: stressful current life circumstances, seek personal growth, be reluctant and enter therapy at the request of a physician, spouse, or other, males are more reluctant to seek help than females. Members of many different professions provide advice and counsel: physicians, clergy. Mental health professions: clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, psychiatric social workers, licensed mental health counselors. Common factors or non-specific curative factors in psychotherapy (on exam) Patient rated alliance is the best predictor of effectiveness and drop-out. Estimated gains depend on: therapist"s impression of changes that have occurred, client"s report of change, reports from the client"s family or friends, comparison of pretreatment and post-treatment scores on personality tests, measures of change in selected overt behaviors. Research evidence pyramid intervention studies: systematic reviews, randomized clinical trials, cohort studies, case-control studies, case series, case studies, narrative reviews, expert opinion, textbooks.
