ASSIGNMENT 1 DUE FRIDAY MARCH 23RD midnight
Come back from break and have review day for test the following class
Sickle Cell Disorder
What is Sickle Cell Anemia?
A genetic condition in which red blood cells are sickle shaped.
Round or disk shaped
Means they easily move through blood vessels. Abnormal hemoglobin,
makes stiff rod in interior red cells which makes sickle/disk shaped. Stick
to walls of vessels and clumped together, and now blocks blood from
moving oxygen to body and tissue and removing CO2 and filtering that
out.
Why Anemia?
Condition in which a person’s blood has a lower than normal of red blood cells
Sickle cells die faster than normal (ten to twenty days) red blood cells.
Body can’t cope
Sluggishness
Jaundice (yellow skin and eyes)
Sickle Cell Disease vs. Sickle Cell Trait
Autosomal Rec. Defect occurring in one of chromosomes. Recessive means you need
both RR to get disease.
Rare to have something triggered
Prevalence
1. Approx. 100,000 Americans have sickle cell disease
2. 1 out of every 365 Black births
3. 1 in 13 black babies is born with sickle cell trait
(heterozygous trait has protective gene against malaria, person can have it but it will not
produce. Usually indians, or blacks)
Prevalence of symptoms at age
6 mos. Of age - 6%
12mos. Of age- 32%
2 yrs of age- 61%
6 yrs. Of age- 52%
