Document Summary

Soc 101: intro to sociology- lecture 10: social class (representation and reproduction) Interviews and observations of children (8-10 years of age) and their families. 3 phases: observe 3rd grade class- midwest, observe 3rd grade class- northeast, home observations. Middle class and working/ poor families differ on 3 key dimensions. After school play time was not scheduled or planned. Children played with a range of age groups. Activities were planned for the children (including band, sports, church group) Children attended these activities with the same age group. Children were taught to do as they were told immediately. Do not try to intimidate" or overpower" authority figures. Children were taught that they can talk and negotiate with authoritative figures. Because families in working class tend to stay together, the ties between families are very strong. Form very strong bonds with people in their social circle. Feel they are restricted to only communicating with people of their class.
