Southern nationalism and the will to continue to fight. Wars are usually won by a combination of three factors: men and material, effective strategy and tactics, morale and dedication to the cause. Demographics and economics play a large role here, but do culture and habits of mind. Societies that have more population, and a better economy usually have the advantages. Culture played a role in who won and who lost. Who can sustain a battle for victory. Texas did not chose a symbol of the confederacy but it was george washington which resembled to the united states: showed signs of loyalty to the united states but separatism. Us nationalism had been growing since the late 1700s. Confederacy nationalism was forced to spring up or start suddenly in 1850"s. Just as the mexican government had difficultly building loyalty and nationalism to their government, the confederacy also had a difficult time to start nationalism.
