Chapter 12 - Hallucinogens (Psychedelics)
●Hallucinogens
○Substances that alter sensory perceptions
○Do not merely amplify familiar states of mind, but rather induce experiences that
are qualitatively different from those of ordinary consciousness
●History of Hallucinogens
○Native American Church
●Effects of Hallucinogens
○Studies by NIDA, which uses LSD as prototype agent. Their studies have found…
○Stages of taking a “trip”
■Heightened, exaggerated senses (altered senses)
■Loss of control
■Self reflection
■Loss of identity and sense of cosmic merging
○Altered senses
■Synesthesia
●A subjective sensation or image of a sense other than one being
stimulated, such as an auditory sensation caused a visual stimulus
●Loss of Control
○User cannot determine whether psychedelic trip will be pleasant, relaxing
experience or bad trip, with recollections of hidden fears and suppressed anxieties
that can precipitate neurotic or psychotic responses
○Flashbacks = recurrences of earlier drug-induced sensory experiences in absence
of drug (may be days or even years later!)
●Self-Reflection
●Loss of Identity and Cosmic Merging
●Mechanisms of Action
●Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD)
○Schedule I
○A single dose of LSD may be between 100 and 500 micrograms → an amount
roughly equal to one-tenth mass of grain of sand
○Effects can last up to 12 hours
○Very difficult to have lethal overdose
○Not considered addictive by medical community
○Forms of LSD
■Crystal/Powders and inhaled
■Liquid and injected
