Self-report questionnaires (the most advanced method there is out there right now) Subjective well-being (fancy synonym for happiness) has two separable components. Life satisfaction = cognitive judgment of how well life is going. Individuals" scores on the two measures are often summed to produce a total swb score. About 1/3 of americans are very happy. Countries that have a greater income equality tend to be happier on average. Asked people from across the income spectrum to report their own happiness and to predict the happiness of others at different income levels. Respondents reported their gender, age, and approximate annual household income. And their life satisfaction: how would you rate your life overall these days? . Finally, consider 10 different household incomes and predict the life satisfaction of someone at eah income level using the same scale. Happiness does rise with income, but it"s not a very strong relationship. People are actually happier than thought even with low incomes.
