Greek religion: polytheistic, gods had human qualities, and they would help people if they received honor & gifts, no sacred literature, Main gods: zeus, king of the gods, hera, his wife, goddess of hearth, poseidon, god of the sea, zeus and hera"s children: athena, dionysus. Dionysus: god of wine & agriculture, festival, at planting time in spring, very joyous occasion, with profess. entertainment, athens had the largest festival, with a prize for the best performance. Dionysus in art: wreath of grape leaves, maenads- women followers, satyrs & centaurs also followed him, tails! Beginning of the theater: at the festival of dionysus in 534 bc, a performer named thespis stepped away from the chorus and played a character in a story, two kinds of plays tragedies and comedies. Production: 3 main actors for the whole play, chorus helped the story, emphasis on dialogue, violence occurs off stage.
