Increases peripheral resistance and both diastolic and systolic blood pressure. Iv admin for hypotensive emergencies to preserve cerebral and coronary blood flow. Used in hypertension sympathetic output from the brain. Cns brainstem (medulla) inhibit ach, ne release; some vasoconstriction; inhibit lipolysis and insulin release (autoreceptor) + isomer is potent 1 agonist and 1 receptor antagonist. Used to increase cardiac output in congestive failure or cardiogenic shock because increases cardiac contractility. Iv admin promotes vasodilation of renal, splanchnic, coronary, and cerebral resistance vessels via d1 receptors. Tremor and tachycardia use with caution in patients with arrhythmias. Adverse effects include tremor and tachycardia use with caution in patients with cardiac arrhythmias, uncontrolled hypertension. Toxicity due to beta-ar (white lightning) and serotonin. Peripheral sympathomimetic actions (not true therapeutic effects because not used in practicing medicine, but this is what it can do) Treats bph without prostate changes to blood pressure. Decreases heart rate, receptor antagonist contractility, blood pressure, and o2 demand.
