Characteristics: large heterogeneous group of spiral, motile bacteria, long, slender, helically coiled, spiral, or corkscrew-shaped bacilli. Management: treatment, drug of choice: penicillin, route and duration based on stage of syphilis (im vs iv, jarisch-herxheimer reaction may occur within hours of treatment, not a med reaction; it"s when the spirochetes lyse, prevention. Infected person may remain contagious for 3-5 years during early syphilis: re-infection is common, treat all discovered cases, promote safe sex practices. Febrile gastroenteritis: fever, chills, ha, myalgias, abdominal pain, diarrhea. Infection during pregnancy: abortion, premature delivery, or sepsis. Nocardia: anaerobic, non-spore forming, gram, aerobic, gram-positive, acid-fast positive bacilli bacilli, common cause of abscess following, common cause of infection in trauma to mucous membrane of mouth or gi tract immunocompromised patients. Mycobacteria: mycobacteria are acid-fast bacilli & slow growing on culture, unique cell wall with a high lipid content, often requires a combination of antibiotics for treatment.
