Official reports which are based on crimes reported to police and arrests made (incomplete) All reported crime doesn"t result in arrests. Best known source is the ucr which is reports from police departments of reported crime and arrests. Part i: murder and nunnegligent homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, larceny-thefy, arson. The national incident based reporting service (nibrs) was added in 1985 to provide supplemental information. Includes detailed information of 46 different offenses. Self-reports, e. g. the national youth survey, asks questions about criminal activity. Can tap into unreported and minimal crime not recorded in official statistics. Is done in schools, where most of the serious offenders may no longer be.
