Some cases have argued that a combination of living conditions in prison can create cruel and unusual punishment (violence, lack of staf ng, sanitation, treatment services) Two main cases dealt with statewide issues of the conditions throughout the whole state department of corrections: Arkansas state prison inmates won a class action suit based on inhumane conditions and various systemic problems. Inmate trustees with no guard supervision, extreme violence, unsanitary conditions, no rehabilitative programs, poor medical care. Tx prison system was ruled in violation of the 8th amendment due to numerous problems. Issues relating to building tenders (inmate trustees), location of prisons, lack of rehabilitative programs and medical care. The ak and tx cases were monumental in that ussc found the whole operation of these state prison systems to be in violation of the 8th amendment. The more important inmate rights case to be ruled on in years.
