Ucr - violent index crimes: homicide, aggravated assault, sexual assault, robbery, simple assault. Gang researchers get their data from paying attention to the news most of the time - but this is unreliable data. Gang prevalence - link between gangs and crime. No uniform national timeline of street gang presence. Uneven development of gangs by region/over time. Gangs present in almost 200 cities by end of 1970s. But note that federal commissions to assess urban problems did not include gangs as a major concern in the late 60s and early 70s. Rst to estimate national numbers: estimated that during late 70s there were 2300 gangs with 98,000 members in 300 cities/towns. Assessed law enforcement responses in 60 cities over 100,000. Spergel"s work in 1990s (began in 88) Ended up with sample of 45 cities classi ed as chronic or emerging 1400 gangs and 120,500 members. Klein, maxson and colleagues - early 1990s.
