Wasn"t intended to do much harm, but some were the exceptions. Pejorative - tending to make/become worse, derogatory, belittling; phrase w/ negative connotations. Tom - socially accepted black person that is faithful to white masters during hardship; based on protagonist in uncle tom"s cabin. Doesn"t challenge status quo; sells himself back into slavery when attached to master . Coons - black person for amusement; black buffoon lacked single mindedness of tom.
