Un environment program (unep): population, growth, deforestation, and carrying capacity. Wanted to determine at one point would the himalayas be so used up until a major ecological disaster occurs. Would depend on how much wood is available. People at the local scale do respond to the ecological conditional. Carrying capacity for human is not just a law of nature, but it also reflect state policies, institutions, resource distribution, etc. Nepal had nationalized forestry in 1950s for export-government nepal took over previously local decisions. Nepal government asked people to stop using animal dung to cook their food, but to use as fertilizer to grow their crops. Geographic patterns of population growth and resource consumption do not coincide. Cartogram: taking a map and rescaling it. The amount of land area (or biocapacity) needed to support a given population or activity. Way to expensive to extract salt out of it. 1. 3% is freshwater, but locked up in glacier and ice caps.
