Disability studies has been a rather controversial topic throughout the years. This is a field of study that has been gaining more and more attention and prominence in literary criticism (hagood). Concepts such as normality, and abnormality, further develop the way in which people perceive disability. There is a profound difference between the terms abled, and disabled, person(s). It is clear that disabled persons have been oppressed on a cultural basis in today"s society. This further implemented according to davis, stating thus that, Disability studies can thus provide a critique of and a politics to discuss how all groups, based on physical traits or markings are selected for disablement by a larger system of regulation and signification. Politics plays a fundamental role in the development and understanding of disability literature.
