In 1066, england was occupied-william i invaded from normandy and declared himself king: created a legal system know as the common law. Included property rights-only extended to the small minority who owned property. Causes capitalism and naion states to arise. 16th and 17th century-england had a mixed government : monarchy (the king), aristocracy (house of lords), and democracy (house of commons) Combines the best of all of the government types with no problems. Bishops served in the house of commons-if they king wanted to promote people to the house of commons, he could choose noble people who were loyal to his power. The king could appoint bishops, create lords, and inluence. Commons through the elecion of members of roten boroughs . Edward coke: supreme court jusice, quesioned whether the king could appoint whoever he chooses-said there were higher laws. Natural law: transcended the power of the monarch, embedded in the common law.
