Getting Ready to Talk to Employers

• You can start doings things right now to make yourself more marketable to employers:
o Find out about yourself. What do you like? What are you good at?
o Find out about jobs and employers by conducting information interviews. What
jobs and organizations appeal to you? Start thinking about internships.
o Start growing your network. Get involved in school activities – join an SPO or
other organization.
• Here’s What You Can Do
o Read, be curious, learn as much as you can – and learn how to write well

o Get good grades
o Be engaged while you are here:
▪ Join a student group or team
▪ CSPD (Center for Student Professional Development) or Career Services
▪ Writing Center, Study Abroad, etc.
▪ Develop relationships with faculty
▪ Develop a network with business people – find out about jobs
Information Interviews
• #1 way for you to learn about jobs and companies
• Who do you know and who do they know?
o Figure out who is in your network and then: Grow your network! This is how
people get a job!
o Parents, aunts, uncles, siblings, cousins, parents of friends, connections of
professors, coaches, employers, friends, neighbors, etc.

• Generally 20 – 30 minutes in length
• You are there to interview them (not the other way around!)
• Ask:
o How did you get into this field?
o What do you do in a typical day?
o What are typical projects that you work on?
o Do you tend to work mostly alone or in teams?
o How do you get rewarded?
o What do you like best about your job? What do you like least?
o What kind of person is successful in your job?
o What kind of person would NOT do well in your job?
• Do’t stay loger tha 30 iutes, uless the iterieer akes a oerted effort to
make you stay
• Dress professionally
• Take notes (you are interviewing them)
• Send a hand-written thank-you note within 48 hours of your interview (*or an email)
