Document Summary

Process of collecting, analyzing and reporting information about the needs, strengths and assets of a community. Lead by community leaders and engaged community members the goal is to identify unmet needs and plans to meet them. Two things to find in a needs assessment: Real vs perceived needs or service needs vs service demands. Real needs/service needs- things the program planner believes a given pop must have or be able to do in order to resolve a health problem based on research. Perceived needs/ service demands- things the community says they must have or be able to do in order to resolve a health problem. Both are important if you miss one the true needs of the target pop may not be understood and program will be a failure. Must identify both which require two techniques of research. The community help is important bc it fosters cooperation and buy in when its time to plan.
