Evidence has shown that mental health disorders- especially depression- are strongly associated w the risk and progression of chronic illnesses. Self-concept: overall view of oneself: physical appearance, sexual performance. Not act of sex, success w opposite sex: intellectual abilities, success in the workplace/school, friendships, problem-solving and coping abilities, unique talents. Factors affecting self-concept: gender, developmental level, socioeconomic status, family, peer relationships, internal locus of control. Components of self-concept: body image, role performance, personal identity, self-esteem. Mental image of physical self: ideal vs. perceived and actual body image, appearance and function of body, gradual vs. sudden body changes. Role performance: the actions a person takes and the behaviors demonstrated in fulfilling a role.
