Self-concept - total of all individuals beliefs about one"s own self. Self-schemas - ideas we have about ourselves that guid our information processing. There is a progression of the sense of self. Physical descriptors and observable characteristics - mostly early on in life. Abstract and psychological states - i am a nice person. Introspection - process of thinking about our thoughts, feelings, and motives. Not very effective because we don"t do it often. We are also not very good at it because most of our selves is beyond conscious awareness. Telling more than we can know - nisbett & wilson (1977) - participants had to report their moods and why they felt that way in diaries.
