By 2 months, first signs of personal agency. I can shake a rattle to cause a sound. By 9 months- can understand their personal agency can direct others" attention. First signs of self-awareness begin after the first year. Prior to 12 months, most cannot recognize themselves in mirror. Wide cultural differences (ranges from 9-24 months) Can recognize themself but does not demonstrate how they think about themselves. By age 2, can pass the mirror test. Extended self- im always the same me. Delayed image of themselves from the past. Secure attachment leads to quicker self concept. Stereotypes also become apart of self concept. Negative views persist into adolescence and impact how teens view interracial interactions. Public- knowledge of how others would see or categorize you.
