PSY 1004 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Confounding, Dependent And Independent Variables
Document Summary
Controlling nature: an experiment must control nature to establishing a cause and effect relationship. The two variables being examined must be isolated from the influence if other variables. The exact character of a relationship must be clear. Distinguishing elements of an experiment: basic goals on demonstrating a cause-and-effect relationship. De(cid:373)o(cid:374)strate the (cid:862)(cid:272)ause(cid:863) happe(cid:374)s (cid:271)efore the effect occurs. Value of the iv is followed by a change in the dv. Establish that one specific variable is responsible for changes in another variable. An experiment must out the possibility that changed are caused by an extraneous variable. Unique elements of experimental research: manipulation: allows researcher to determine the direction of the relationship. Manipulate one variable iv and observe the second variable dv to see if it is affected. Researcher determines specific value of the iv to examine: helps researchers control the influence of outside variables. A third outside variable may be responsible for the relationship between variables.
