• Women and Leisure
o Historically, leisure opportunities reside with caucasian men
o Feminism

▪ Regained steam during WWII as well as after the war

o Role obligation linked with leisure opportunities
o Unstructured and fragmented leisure

o Feminism – political, social, and economic equality among men and women
o The 19th amendment gave the women the right to vote.

access to the same jobs. This is still an issue today
o The wave of feminism gave women the same opportunities as men in the sense
of leisure. It took awhile for structured activity to get the same attention, but
eventually has caught on.
o Title IX: No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded
from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination
under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.
o Male athletes in 1972 – 170,384; 2011 – 235,800
o Female athletes in 1972 – 31,852: 2011 – 177,800
o Women still do more work around the house generally, leaving them with less
time for leisurely pursuits.
o A woa’s ole as a wife geeally defines her leisure and she focuses on her
family and household responsibilities more than the man.
o Women typically feel the need to put others interests ahead of her own and
forgo her own leisure.
o Women spend most of their leisure inside the home with unstructured activity
that a e sueezed i
o If women do not have a job outside of the home, they feel as if they have not
earned the time for leisure and have to pick up the second shift which consists of
fixing dinner, getting children ready for bed, etc.
• Men and Leisure
o Traditional gender roles associated with men changing over time
▪ Changing of work force having major impact
▪ More men taking on strong father role and child rearing responsibilities
• Generation Y and up have new perspective of masculine roles
• 176,000 men classified as stay at home fathers
o Utilize leisure as a way to socialize
o Changes in traditional masculine has important impacts on leisure
▪ Less conformity to expected activities
▪ More domestic hobbies
