Document Summary

Grew from religious ceremonies that were central to grecian life, particularly the god dionysus, the most immediate predecessor to greek theatre was the dithyramb. Took place in the spring and lasted for several days. Wars would cease and politics were placed on hold to celebrate the festival. Originally showcased dithyrambs, but with time new forms of theatre were incorporated. At the close of the festival the best playwrights were awarded prizes: tragedy in 534 b. c. e. and by 486 b. c. e. Comedy and satyr plays were included as well: the archon was an appointed government official who chose the plays for the city. Dionysia: the choregoi served as the equivalent to modern producers and were appointed by the archon. They were wealthy citizens who funded the plays: the subject for most grecian plays was grecian mythology, structure of greek tragedy, prologue- exposition, parodos- entrance of the chorus. Strophe- a stanza in which the chorus approaches the audience.
