Document Summary

Divisions of the kidney: renal cortex (the outer portion of the kidney, renal medulla (inner portion of the kidney) Kidney histology: the kidney is composed of nephrons (produce urine from blood) and a collecting system. The nephron is the functional unit of the kidney, urine production begins here. Blood is filtered into the nephron and the composition changes during the process, composed of a renal corpuscle and renal tubule. Glomerulus: an intertwining network of capillaries that receives that receives blood from the afferent arteriole and leaves from the efferent arteriole. Bowman"s capsule: composed of squamous epithelial cells, sac like structures that surround the glomerulus and encloses the urinary space. Urinary space: space between the inner layer liming of the glomerulus and the outer layer of the capsule. Filtration: occurs in the renal corpuscle, blood pressure forces h2o and dissolved substances out of the glomerulus and into the urinary spaces. Produces a protein solution called filtrate similar to blood.
