You know how to take a health history now we need to focus on the physical exam. Abdomen assessment: inspect, auscultate, then palpate and percussion. Begins when you rst meet person with general survey. As you proceed through examination, start assessment of each body system with inspection. Inspection requires: good lighting, adequate exposure, and occasional use of instruments. Second step and often con rms points you noted during inspection. Uses touch to asses these factors: temperature, moisture, organ location, swelling, vibration, pulsation, rigidity, spasticity, crepitation, masses, lumps. Different parts of the hands are used: ngertips, grasping action of nger and thumb, dorsa of the hands, and base of nger. Light palpation rst to detect surface characteristics and accustom person to being touched. Intermittent pressure better than one long continuous palpation.
