NSG 3315 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Allergic Contact Dermatitis, Immunoglobulin G, Antigen
Document Summary
Antigens - non self substances or foreign substances. Antibodies - y shaped proteins secreted by b cells that function as antigen receptors on immune cells that recognize foreign substances. Lymph nodes, thymus, spleen, tonsils, bone marrow, appendix, peer"s patches (intestine) Igm - rst produced by newborn; usually rst to response to an antigen. Scavengers that actually engulf and digest foreign cells. Help to ght off antigens until adaptive immunity can begin. Macrophages actually process and present the antigen to the lymphocyte so that adaptive immunity can kick in. Programmed to kill foreign cells automatically they don"t have to be activated by macrophages or cytokines. Peripheral - lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils, appendix, peyer"s patches in the intestines. Physical, chemical, molecular, and cellular defenses in place prior to infection. Uses a focuses recognition unique to the antigen followed by an ampli ed response. Consists of epithelial barriers, neutrophils, phagocytes cells including monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, nk cells.
