NSG 3336 Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Unstable Angina, Foam Cell, Disneymania 2
Document Summary
Etiology = most common cause of heart disease. Higher in white males, and african american females (postmenopausal) Most common symptom for men > chest pain. Most common symptom for women > occipital pain, jaw pain, neck/ throat pain, shoulder pain, upper arm pain, back pain, and nausea. Modi able risk factors = smoking, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, dm 2, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, stress, and excessive alcohol consumption. Non-modi able risk factors = gender, race, dm 1, older than 65, heredity. Pathophysiology = obstruction of blood ow within the coronary caused by atherosclerosis or plaque. Tunica intima (endothelium) is damaged triggering the in ammatory response that initiates speci c cellular and molecule reaction creating plaques. Ldl enters layer and is modi ed through oxidation which attracts macrophages to absorb the ldl and become foam cells. Potential plaque rupture may occur > platelets aggregate to rupture plaque surface = thrombus formation. Clinical manifestations > virtually silent until artery is approximately 40% blocked.
