Document Summary

There are three major functions of the circulatory system. Two of them are well-known: transportation and protection. Review your notes from a&p i to find examples of the transportation function. Think of other examples of the transportation function from your own experiences and share your examples with others by posting on the discussion board. A second major function of the circulatory system is protection. The circulatory system works in tandem with the lymphatic system (topic 5) to provide protection against disease (covered in detail in topic 6). In addition to protecting against disease, the circulatory system protects itself against blood loss through mechanisms involving the blood and blood vessels. A third major function (in addition to transportation and protection) is regulation. The circulatory system plays an important role in thermoregulation by transporting heat to the core to maintain internal temperature when the body is exposed to a cool or cold environment.
