BIOL 221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Esophagus, Pharynx, Histology
Document Summary
What nerve or nerves carry afferent impulses from: Think-pair-share: digestive processes in mouth, pharynx and esophagus. The cardiac region of the stomach, or cardia, is the first part of the stomach into which the food enters. Slightly to the left and superior to the cardia is the fundus. The fundus enlarges to allow additional food to enter the stomach. The lesser curvature is on the superior side of the stomach while the greater curvature is on the inferior side of the body. The stomach narrows at the distal end as the pyloric region. The wider are of connection to the body of the stomach is the pyloric antrum; the narrowed area is the pyloric canal. The pyloric sphincter controls movement of chyme from the stomach into the small intestine. Kills many pathogens (due to low ph) The stomach stores food temporarily as it can be ingested more rapidly than it can be processed.
