Digestive processes of the mouth: ingests, begins mechanical breakdown by chewing, starts the digestion of polysaccharides. Absorption does not occur in the mouth, except for a few drugs like nitroglycerine for pain -chewing and swallowing are the mechanical processes that promote mechanical breakdown and propulsion. As food enter, mechanical breaks down by chewing. The cheeks and closed lips hold food bw the teeth, the tongue mixes food with saliva to soften in the teeth cut and grind solid foods into smaller morsels. We voluntary put food in our mouth and contract the muscles that close our jaws. "the pattern and rhythm of the continued jaw movements are controlled mainly my stretch reflexes and in response to pressure inputs from receptors in the cheeks, gums, and tongue, can also be voluntary. Pharynx and esophagus serve as conduits to pass food from the mouth to the stomach -digestive function is food propulsion, done by deglutition or swallowing.
