BIOL 221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Seminal Vesicle, Prostate, Prostate Cancer
Document Summary
The seminal vesicles, which lie posterior to the urinary bladder, produce about 60% of the added fluid. Another 30% or so comes from the prostate gland whose alkaline secretions help neutralize the acidity of the urethra and vagina. Hypertrophy makes urination difficult since the gland completely surrounds the urethra. Prostate cancer represents slightly less than 1/3 of the cancers in men. The bulbourethral (cowper"s) glands lie at the base of the penis. Their secretions are also somewhat alkaline and help neutralize acidity in the urethra and vagina. Sperm plus other products of testes and accessory glands. Semen is the combination of sperm plus the products of the testes and accessory glands. Alkaline secretions neutralize the ph within the urethra and vagina. Formation of sperm spermatogenesis involves both meiotic cell division and maturation of the sperm in a process called spermiogenesis.
