BIOL 222 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Pulmonary Compliance, External Intercostal Muscles, Bronchoconstriction
Document Summary
Expiration (quiet breathing) diaphragm and external intercostals. Decrease volume of lungs increase pressure (intrapulmonary) Histamine, cold air, anything irritating (to respiratory system) Pulmonary fibrosis - scar tissue in lungs. If you had a blow to the chest and you then went to breathe it would hurt. Gas exchange to understand gas exchange we need to understand partial pressure of oxygen and carbon dioxide, and diffusion of molecules between a gas and a liquid. Henry"s law (diffusion of molecules between a gas and liquid) Sum of each partial pressure equals the total pressure exerted by the gas mixture. At a given temperature, the amount of a particular gas that dissolves in the water is determined by its solubility in water and its partial pressure in the air. When air and water are in contact with each other, gases diffuse down concentration (pressure) gradient until partial pressure in both are equal.
