Chapter 6: the police: organization, role, and function: police organization - independent agencies under executive branch of government. Militaristic, hierarchal structure: change of command, police chief is at the top setting policy, numerous operating divisions, promotion based on time in rank system. Cost effective: media shows police as fearless crime ghters, great bulk of police patrol efforts is devoted to order maintenance or peacekeeping not crime ghting. Patrol of cers are 2/3 of the force and are a highly visible component: the backbone of policing. Patrol of cers work in designated beats and 24 hour shifts. Aggressive patrol (proactive policing) - more of cers per designation: more deterrent effect policing will help, technique to scare away people from committing crime in the areas, crime control will support, could potentially create more unnecessary arrests. Broken windows policing: neighborhood disorder creates fear, neighborhoods give out crime-promoting signals, police need to aggressively target low-level quality of life crimes, rehabilitative justice perspective will support.
