Most opposition of slavery has little to do with the condition of enslaved people. Missouri compromise of 1820 non slavery of the louisiana territories would have slavery but below the line there could be slavery, it was left up to the states together. Increased commercial networks and economic activity is binding the free north. As slavery is increasing the two parts of the nation are looking more and more different. Federalist party gone by 1810s and leave behind the whig party (east coast cities) Democratic party controls congress and presidency in 1846. Democrats were beginning to split over the topic of slavery. David wilmot- a democrat wants to limit slavery. Slavery will be prohibited from the lands. The people who vote for wilmot are a combination of northern democrats and northern whigs. The people who vote against wilmot"s bill are southern democrats and southern whigs.
