Mount vernon"s enslaved community as a case study. Life and culture in the slave quarter. Northup made food for himself at midnight because all other hours were for the master. Long hours, 6 days a week 14 hours a day. Enslaved cooks, domestics work 7 days a week. Young people work as well, enslaved children work until they die. Jefferson, talks about enslavement of children on his plantation, they nurse, care for livestock. At 16 they become important field workers. Fetch the highest prices at age 16 because of their physical strength. In most plantations the prime field game are women. Women are doing as much if not more physical labor than men. Not uncommon for master chefs to be men. Women do laundry, set and clean fire, lady"s maids. The decision to pick out certain enslaved people. The most common place enslaved people are working is cotton plantations. Compares the number of pounds of cotton that people pick.
