Colonialism is the effects of the industrial revolution (both socially and technologically) spread over the entire globe. That there was increased competition between european (and some asian powers) for colonies, resources and markets. That industrial technologies were used (gunboats , repeating rifles) in colonial wars- the opium wars between britain and china.
