There are mainly two types of nutrients. Macronutrients- are required by the body in greatest largest amounts. Calories- are the measure of the amount of energy that can be derived from food. Average adult- need 2000, most men, active women, teenage girls, older children need- 2200, active men, teenage boys- athletes need 2800. Nutrients that the body cannot manufacture itself and just obtain from food. Need for calories depends on gender, age, body frame, weight, % of body fat and activity level. There are nine calories in every gram of fat four calories in every gram of carbohydrate and protein. Main function is to repair and rebuild muscles, bones, blood, hair, and fingernails. There are a total of 20 amino acids.
