7 endocrine system: significance of endocrine system: communicates messages that influence physiological responses and adaptations in the body form of communication (i. e. hormones): sends signals in the form of hormones released from glands. Know the two types of communication and a messanger for each ( the endocrine system and nervous system are communicators. Neurotransmitters are the messenger for the nervous system. Hormones general function: blood is major transport system for hormones to target cells. Target cells have specific receptors for the many different hormones. Influenced by exercise, nutritional intake, environment: method of release circadian : light and dark cycles, sleep patterns, seasonal changes. Start out low in morning and peak later in day classification of hormone by function: endocrine- secreted into blood. Paracrine- released and acts on nearby cells; no transport in blood. Autocrine: released and acts on the cell that released it.
