KNES 364 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Artificial Cardiac Pacemaker, Electrocardiography, Digitalis
Document Summary
Sometimes ekgs can be deceiving and you have to look at the big picture before jumping to conclusions. Ultimately, we"re using an ekg during and ett for diagnostic/prognostic purposes, but sometimes there are certain underlying situations where the. Heartbeats generated from an implanted pacemaker, show up on an ekg with either a depressed or an elevated st segment. We can"t automatically interpret these ekgs as positive for myocardial ischemia or an acute heart attack. We"ll have to look at the big picture . If a person takes digitalis, his/her ekg will show st segment depression (see below) The point at which a person reaches a state of myocardial ischemia is usually when the heart is working hard and can"t keep up with the demands of the body. Beta blockers do not allow the heart rate to rise and therefore prevent the person from reaching this threshold of myocardial ischemia. St segment depression > 1. 0 mm at rest.
